Böhler N680 is a stainless steel worth considering when wet conditions are an important part of your knife use. Böhler emphasizes its resistance to seawater and chloride environments. That gives the material a clear purpose, though the blade is only one part of a knife that needs to cope with water.
What Is Böhler N680?
N680 is a hardenable chromium-molybdenum steel with vanadium and nitrogen additions. It is a separate grade from N690. Böhler’s composition table marks nitrogen as present without giving a percentage, so we do not fill that gap with a number from another steel or a secondary chart.
What Matters for Cutting Performance?
Corrosion resistance is the main reason to look closely at N680, rather than assuming it promises exceptional abrasive edge retention. For fishing or other wet work, consider blade shape, grip security and how readily you can clean the knife. A corrosion-resistant blade does not establish the same resistance for the pivot, springs or fasteners.
Care and Sharpening
Rinse away salt and dry the knife after use, following the maker’s instructions for the handle and mechanism. This remains worthwhile even with a steel intended for corrosive environments. Maintain the edge with an abrasive that cuts cleanly, and remove the burr before putting it back to work.
Choosing a Böhler N680 Knife
Check that the listing actually specifies N680, then consider the whole knife’s suitability for wet handling. The producer’s seawater positioning is useful context, but it is not a guarantee that an assembled knife can be left wet indefinitely. If wear resistance is your overriding concern, compare the maker’s intended use as well as the corrosion-focused material choice. Our knife steel guide explains the broader tradeoffs.
