CPM CruWear brings substantially more toughness than S30V, while S30V offers higher abrasive edge retention and stainless corrosion resistance. This is a meaningful choice for a working knife: more margin against chipping, or a more corrosion-resistant blade that also rates higher for wear.
Performance Ratings
For the science, we turn to Dr. Larrin Thomas of Knife Steel Nerds, who has kindly allowed us to share his ratings here.

This Comparison Uses CPM CruWear
The CruWear ratings here apply to the powder-metallurgy CPM version. Niagara publishes separate data for conventional CRU-WEAR and CPM CruWear, so the distinction should remain visible when checking a knife.
A retailer may shorten the name to CruWear. Confirm the maker’s designation rather than assuming every abbreviated listing refers to the same production route.
Our CPM CruWear steel profile takes a closer look at its properties and care.
CPM CruWear Has Much Greater Toughness
CPM CruWear rates 8 for toughness against S30V at 4. We would favor it when resistance to chipping is more important than maximum abrasive wear in this pair.
The score does not make any blade immune to damage. Choose an edge geometry appropriate to the work and avoid using a cutting blade for lateral force it was not designed to take.
Our S30V steel profile takes a closer look at its properties and care.
S30V Wins Wear and Corrosion Resistance
S30V rates 6 for abrasive edge retention, compared with CPM CruWear at 5. Corrosion resistance is 7.5 versus 5.5. For repeated abrasive slicing in a knife that also sees damp carry, S30V has two useful advantages.
CPM CruWear is not stainless. Clean and dry it after use and protect it for storage as appropriate; a coating does not protect the exposed cutting edge.
Choose Toughness or Stainless Convenience
We would take CPM CruWear when edge damage is the main concern and the extra care is acceptable. We would take S30V for an everyday slicing knife when stainless corrosion resistance and abrasive wear are more valuable.
Neither choice requires chasing the highest possible hardness. The maker’s treatment and the finished edge should suit the knife’s purpose, rather than being selected from one material score.
