D2 and MagnaCut have the same abrasive edge-retention rating, but that is where the similarity ends. Original MagnaCut is much tougher and substantially more corrosion resistant in Larrin Thomas’s framework. If you are comparing two knives, the reason to choose MagnaCut here is the broader balance of properties rather than a promise of longer cutting.
Performance Ratings
For the science, we turn to Dr. Larrin Thomas of Knife Steel Nerds, who has kindly allowed us to share his ratings here.
The toughness score of 7 is for original Crucible MagnaCut. In written feedback to KnifeInformer, Dr. Thomas provided a toughness rating of 8.5 for Erasteel MagnaCut; his January 2026 testing explains the differences between the two versions. This table uses the original version.

Equal Wear Ratings Do Not Mean Identical Knives
Both steels rate 5 for abrasive edge retention. We would not describe MagnaCut as a wear upgrade over D2 on these scores alone. A thinner blade or more suitable edge can still make one knife a better cutter.
The D2 entry means conventional D2. CPM D2 has its own material rating, so check the full designation before applying this comparison.

MagnaCut Offers More Toughness
Original MagnaCut rates 7 for toughness and D2 3.5. That is a useful advantage when resistance to edge damage matters alongside wear resistance.
The separate Erasteel MagnaCut update is explained in the rating note. Neither version turns a knife into a tool for twisting or prying; edge geometry and intended use still set limits.

The Rust-Care Difference Is Substantial
MagnaCut rates 9.5 for corrosion resistance against D2 at 4.5. For damp carry or frequent food preparation, we would strongly favor MagnaCut between these two.
D2 still needs cleaning, drying and suitable storage protection. A coated D2 blade leaves an exposed edge, so its coating does not make maintenance equivalent to MagnaCut.
When Would D2 Still Make Sense?
Choose the D2 knife if its design, fit or actual price makes it a better match and its care needs are acceptable. A useful D2 knife does not become obsolete because another steel has stronger ratings.
When the knives are equally appealing, MagnaCut is our preference for its toughness and corrosion advantages. If your only problem is abrasive dulling, consider the edge and sharpening before assuming this steel change will fix it.
