CPM CruWear offers substantially more toughness than S45VN, while S45VN brings stainless corrosion resistance and a small abrasive-wear advantage. This is mainly a decision about edge-damage resistance and rust care, rather than chasing a large difference in cutting life.

CruWear Has the Clear Toughness Lead
CPM CruWear rates 8 for toughness against S45VN at 4. That is the strongest reason to choose it when resisting chipping matters.
The CPM designation matters here. Do not silently assign these powder-steel ratings to an unspecified conventional CruWear blade.
Our CRUWEAR steel profile explains its properties and care in more detail.
The Wear Difference Is Smaller
S45VN rates 5.5 for abrasive edge retention and CPM CruWear 5. The half-point separation deserves less weight than the larger toughness and corrosion differences.
We would not promise a dramatic sharpening-interval improvement from this small wear gap. Compare blade geometry and treatment as well.
Our S45VN steel profile explains its properties and care in more detail.
S45VN Is the Stainless Choice
S45VN rates 8 for corrosion resistance against CPM CruWear at 5.5. CruWear is not stainless and needs more attention to damp carry and storage.
If rust care is the part of ownership you dislike, S45VN addresses it directly. A coated CruWear blade still leaves the edge exposed.
Toughness or Lower Rust Maintenance?
We would choose CPM CruWear when its toughness is genuinely useful and regular maintenance fits the routine. S45VN is our preference when stainless care is more valuable.
The right handle and grind can still outweigh a steel preference. Look for the benefit you will use rather than a universal winner.
