Elmax has a small lead in abrasive edge retention; MagnaCut offers higher toughness and corrosion resistance. For a new everyday knife, we would generally lean toward MagnaCut if the designs and prices are comparable. An Elmax knife you already enjoy is a different decision: its slightly stronger wear rating and familiar fit may give you little reason to replace it.
Performance Ratings
For the science, we turn to Dr. Larrin Thomas of Knife Steel Nerds, who has kindly allowed us to share his ratings here.
The toughness score of 7 is for original Crucible MagnaCut. In written feedback to KnifeInformer, Dr. Thomas provided a toughness rating of 8.5 for Erasteel MagnaCut; his January 2026 testing explains the differences between the two versions. This table uses the original version.

How Much Does Elmax’s Edge-Retention Lead Matter?
Elmax rates 5.5 for abrasive edge retention, compared with MagnaCut at 5. That is a modest difference in this framework, not a promise that Elmax will cut 10% longer. For repeated cardboard cutting, wear resistance deserves attention. For opening a handful of packages, blade thickness and a comfortable handle may matter more than the half-point gap.
Abrasive wear is only one way an edge loses its usefulness. If your edge chips before it wears dull, choosing by the edge-retention score alone misses the more relevant tradeoff.

Where MagnaCut Has the Clearer Advantage
Original MagnaCut scores 7 for toughness, while Elmax scores 4. That gives MagnaCut the stronger case when resistance to chipped edges matters. It does not make a thin tip suitable for prying, or guarantee that every MagnaCut knife will resist damage better than every Elmax knife. The maker’s heat treatment and edge geometry still shape the result.

Rust Care and Sharpening
Both are stainless steels, but MagnaCut’s corrosion-resistance rating of 9.5 is higher than Elmax’s 8. We would favor MagnaCut for frequent exposure to damp pockets or food residue. Neither rating makes the handle hardware or the whole knife rustproof, so rinse away residue and dry the knife before storage.
For sharpening, diamond or cubic boron nitride (CBN) abrasives are practical choices for either steel, especially when removing damage or changing the edge angle. We would not promise a specific sharpening-time advantage from these ratings: there is no sharpening-speed score here, and the abrasive, edge thickness and amount of metal removed all matter.
Should You Replace an Elmax Knife With MagnaCut?
If your Elmax knife stays sharp long enough and you are happy with its care, keep using it. MagnaCut becomes a more useful upgrade when you want greater resistance to chips or corrosion, rather than a longer interval between sharpenings from abrasive wear alone.
When buying either steel for the first time, compare the actual knives: blade geometry, handle comfort, the maker’s hardness specification and price. An Elmax model that fits your hand and cutting tasks well can be a better purchase than a MagnaCut model that does not. Our knife steel guide puts the wider range of tradeoffs in context.
