ATS-34 is a stainless blade steel associated with custom knives and older knife specifications. It remains worth understanding when evaluating one of those knives, but its reputation should not replace a look at the actual blade. Geometry, condition and heat treatment still matter.
What Is ATS-34?
ATS-34 appears in current Proterial information and older Hitachi references. It is a separate material identity from 154CM and CPM 154, even though comparisons between them are common. Proterial’s public table discloses chromium and molybdenum while keeping several other quantities closed.
What Matters for Cutting Performance?
The producer identifies custom knives and cutlery as applications. That tells you where the material is intended to be used, not how a particular knife compares in edge retention or toughness. Check the maker’s description of the grind and intended work rather than borrowing performance numbers from a related steel.
Care and Sharpening
Clean the blade and dry it after use, especially after food or salt exposure. When maintaining an older knife, examine the existing bevel before changing it: previous sharpening may have altered the geometry. Use an effective abrasive, remove the burr and assess the edge with controlled cutting.
Choosing a Knife in ATS-34
For an older ATS-34 knife, consider condition, edge thickness and the maker’s work alongside the steel. The material name does not make it obsolete or guarantee that it matches a modern alternative. Our composition panel preserves the producer’s disclosure limits instead of filling missing numbers from another grade. Our knife steel guide explains the broader choices.
Composition

ATS-34: producer public values only; others undisclosed; selected reported elements, not an assay of a finished knife. Proterial: YSS ATS34.
| Element | ATS-34 |
|---|---|
| Chromium (Cr) | 14% |
