BG-42 is a stainless steel with a background in demanding bearing applications and a documented history as a knife material. One useful detail is how it is made: the producer sheet describes double vacuum melting, not powder metallurgy. Those processes should not be treated as interchangeable labels.
What Is BG-42?
The retained Latrobe datasheet, now hosted by Carpenter, identifies BG-42 as a VIM VAR martensitic stainless steel. That means vacuum induction melting followed by vacuum arc remelting. Its published composition includes 1.2% vanadium.
What Matters for Cutting Performance?
The producer’s knife-steel sheet discusses wear resistance and corrosion resistance, but its comparisons describe particular material conditions. They do not establish the cutting life of every BG-42 knife. With a finished blade, look at the maker’s heat treatment and grind before drawing conclusions from the alloy’s industrial background.
Care and Sharpening
Keep the blade clean and dry after wet use. Stainless properties do not remove the need to clear salt or food from the knife. When sharpening, start with a grit that does the required work and move finer after the edge is formed; polishing alone is not a quick way to repair damage.
Choosing a Knife in BG-42
BG-42 often comes up when researching an existing knife, so condition and sharpening history deserve attention. Confirm the maker’s specification rather than assuming a similar-looking material name means the same alloy. The historical datasheet establishes the material’s background, not present-day stock availability. Our knife steel guide explains the broader choices.
