RWL34 is a stainless powder-metallurgy steel from Damasteel. It is useful to know the distinction between the steel and the company’s patterned products: an RWL34 blade does not have to be Damascus. When choosing one, pay attention to the maker’s grind and heat treatment as well as the name on the blade.
What Is RWL34?
RWL34 is a standalone grade supplied by Damasteel. Related-looking chemistry does not make it identical to 154CM or CPM 154, and we do not transfer those steels’ performance scores to it. A patterned blade that uses RWL34 as one constituent is also a different product from a solid RWL34 blade.
What Matters for Cutting Performance?
Damasteel describes RWL34 as a stainless powder steel combining edge retention, strength and toughness. Those are producer descriptions, rather than a numerical ranking against other knife steels.
For a knife, that makes RWL34 worth considering for stainless everyday cutting. Look at the maker’s edge geometry and heat treatment, and confirm whether you are buying solid RWL34 or a patterned steel containing it.
Care and Sharpening
Clean off salt and food residue and dry the blade after use. Stainless steel still benefits from this routine, particularly around joints and handle fittings. For sharpening, use an abrasive that removes steel effectively and follow the existing bevel unless you have a reason to change the geometry.
Choosing an RWL34 Knife
Confirm whether the listing describes solid RWL34 or a patterned material containing it. Then compare dimensions, handle comfort and maker support. A clearly described blade and an appropriate grind are more useful buying information than an unsupported claim that the steel will never chip or needs no maintenance. Our knife steel guide explains the broader tradeoffs.
