⛵ Rhode Island Knife Laws
Overview
Rhode Island does not have statewide preemption, so local ordinances may impose additional restrictions. Open carry is legal, but concealed carry of certain knives is restricted. Blade length limits apply at 3 inches in certain contexts. Disguised knives have restrictions.
Quick Legal Facts
Carry Laws & Blade Length
Open carry of knives is legal in Rhode Island. RIGL 11-47-42(a)(2) prohibits carrying a dagger, dirk, stiletto, sword-in-cane, bowie knife, or other similar weapon only when carried 'with intent to use the same unlawfully against another.' Without unlawful intent, open carry is permitted.
Statute: 11-47-42.
Concealed carry of any knife with a blade longer than 3 inches is prohibited under RIGL 11-47-42(a)(3). Additionally, daggers, dirks, stilettos, swords-in-cane, bowie knives, and similar weapons may not be carried concealed regardless of blade length. Blade length is measured 'from the end of the handle where the blade is attached to the end of the blade.'
Statute: 11-47-42.
A knife with a blade longer than 3 inches may not be carried concealed (RIGL 11-47-42(a)(3)) and may not be sold or transferred to a minor without written parental authorization (RIGL 11-47-42(b)). There is no blade length restriction for open carry. Blade length is measured from the end of the handle where the blade is attached to the end of the blade.
